1. A randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was preformed on 175 Dutch children suffering from recurrent upper respiratory tract infections.

Children in the treatment group were given a “constitutional medicine” (individualised) for their overall health as well as acute medicines to treat the acute respiratory infections as they developed. The study found that the children given homeopathic medicines had a 16% better daily symptom score than children given a placebo. This study also found that the number of children given a placebo who had to undergo an adenoidectomy was 24% higher than for the treatment group. A 54.8% reduction in the use of antibiotics in the children given the homeopathic medicine was reported, while the placebo group had a 37.7% reduction in antibiotic use.  (British Medical Journal, Nov 19, 1994, 309,1329-32).

In a study of 24 patients with asthma, researchers used allergy testing to establish what patients were allergic to then gave patients the homeopathic medicine made from their main allergen. The result showed that 82% of patients given the individualized homeopathic medicine improved compared with 38% given a placebo. The authors also did a meta-analysis of three similar asthma studies, totaling 202 patients, with similar results. 2. The Ministerial Advisory Committee on Complementary and Alternative Health (MACCAH) explores this issue and made the following recommendations on its final report to the Minister:

research funding bodies
•    Recognition should be given by research funding bodies, healthcare professional organizations and educational institutions to the relevance and importance of Research at different levels of evidence for the efficacy and safety of CAM. Integration
