Nicolette McDonald leaves Care Chemist

Care Chemist chief executive Nicolette McDonald has resigned from her position after four and a half years and is returning to her roots as a community pharmacist.

In partnership with Auckland pharmacist Lyn Goddard, Ms McDonald has floated Panmure LN Limited and purchased two pharmacies in the eastern suburb.

She departs Pharmacybrands on 9 July and will start working as a hands-on pharmacist on 14 July.

Ms McDonald has been spearheading the growth of Care Chemist stores since the brand’s move to the Life Pharmacy stable in 2008 and has been credited for taking the number of stores from eight to an impressive 26 as of this week.

She was head hunted for the present role by Care Chemist founder Des Adams and had, prior to that, spent two years at Dispensary First.

Ms McDonald says her move from Dispensary First to Care Chemist had been a smooth one as both had a heavy focus on the dispensary-based professional services she is so passionate about.

She now plans to bring the same passion to her pharmacy services for the Panmure community.

Speaking to Pharmacy Today, Ms McDonald says she has not been practicing as a pharmacist for the past seven years and a chance meeting with Ms Goddard recently reignited her passion.

“I wanted to run my own business and walk the talk,” she says.

Having spent all these years in an executive position, she says she was getting away from that.

“I realised that if I wanted to go back, it’s now or never.”

PBL chief executive Alan Wham calls her departure a loss for Care Chemist and says she has done a “fantastic job” over the years.

He says Care Chemist will retain its heavy focus on services that add value to the professional side of community pharmacy and will not go down the retail path.
