Medsafe reviews Code of Recalls

Medsafe is reviewing its Code of Recalls following the recent spate of consumer level recalls.

Stewart Jessamine, group manager of Medsafe, says Medsafe is participating in a working group convened by the Research Medicines Industry Association to discuss the Pharmacy Guild’s call for compensation.

In a written statement to Pharmacy Today Dr Jessamine says this work is at an early stage of information gathering and each party has agreed to undertake action and discuss the issue further.

In Medsafe’s case this will be to review the Code of Recalls to determine if it needs to be updated. Dr Jessamine says the action has been added to Medsafe’s workplan.

The Pharmaceutical Society is also taking part in the talks.

Elizabeth Plant says the society acknowledges pharmacists should be recognised for the work they do implementing recalls and the expertise they have.

“The society views these recalls and their frequency with concern and is taking part in talks with officials to put an appropriate process in place.”

Meanwhile, Medsafe is continuing to update its information on why the Pacific Atenolol (atenolol) 50mg and 100mg tablets recall was necessary.

The latest update can be viewed at http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/hot/media/2010/QandAPacificAtenolol.asp
