Consultation begins on Pharmacist Prescriber scope

The Pharmacy Council has released the consultation document on the proposed pharmacist prescriber scope of practice.

The stakeholders have until 7 July to go through the detailed document, with its supporting appendices, and register their feedback either online (http://www.pharmacycouncil.org.nz/consultations) or by email. The earlier reported closing date for submissions was 6 July.

Chief executive and registrar Bronwyn Clark says the new scope will allow suitably trained and qualified clinical pharmacists working in collaborative health teams to prescribe prescription medicines and controlled drugs to patients in their care.

“The Council believes there are considerable benefits to the public, the government and health professionals in enabling these pharmacists to become designated prescribers, as defined in the Medicines Act,” she says in an email to stakeholders inviting feedback.

“The consultation document is intended to inform stakeholders of this proposed scope of practice, and to give an opportunity to provide feedback.”
