Pharmacy 547 shines at Pharmacy Awards

Hamilton’s Pharmacy 547 was the shining light of the 2010 Pharmacy Today/ ProPharma Pharmacy Awards held on Saturday at Sky City Grand.

Pharmacy 547's owners Ian McMichael and Alice Littlewood were crowned the Supreme Winners and also took out two other awards - Best Community Pharmacy Business and Innovation in Pharmacy Practice.

Accepting the supreme award to rowdy applause, Mr McMichael said: “We need to keep celebrating the good that pharmacy does. Our catch cry needs to be ‘Pharmacy can do it. Pharmacy loves doing it. The community loves pharmacy doing it’.”

The Supreme Award was in recognition of Pharmacy 547’s trial for INR testing and warfarin management, which has been so successful it is going to be replicated at sites across New Zealand.

It was a stellar year for attendance – with in excess of 450 guests, up 20% on last year.

Attendees were a who’s who of pharmacy. Party photographs will be available at www.pharmacyawards.co.nz

MC Paul Holmes entertained the audience with his acerbic wit.

In between anecdotes, he mentioned Pharmacy Guild president Ian Johnson’s court action against GlaxoSmithKline – “Good luck with that Ian” - which was met with whoops from the audience.

A highlight of the evening was the recently knighted Sir Graeme Douglas receiving a spontaneous standing ovation as he presented the award for Young Pharmacist of the Year to Ban Quillinchi.

General manager of ProPharma David Lewis took the opportunity to highlight the recent “explosion” of pharmacies in his welcoming speech.

He said the increased competition is not positive, but is leading to degradation of service and will ultimately lead to a lowering of the public’s perception of pharmacy.
